לרגל ציון יובל למבצע "הקש בדלת", נסקרת במאמרנו פעילות האגודה למלחמה בסרטן למען החולים ונגד המחלה, התואמות את עקרונות המאבק בסרטן שעליהם הכריז ארגון הסרטן הבינלאומי – ה-UICC. יובהר, כי פעילותה הענפה של האגודה מתבססת על תרומות בלבד, ללא מימון מתקציב משרד ממשלתי כלשהו, עובדה זו מאפשרת הימנעות ממעורבותם של שיקולים זרים, תוך התבססות על מיטב אנשי המקצוע המומחים בתחום והנחיות בינלאומיות מוכחות.

מוצגת במאמר זה פעילותה של האגודה ביחס לסעיפי האמנה הבינלאומית, החל מהאבחון המוקדם, המשך בשיפור דרכי הטיפול והשיקום, וכלה בשמירה על איכות חיי החולים והמחלימים.

בסקירה זו מוצג כיצד, ביוזמת האגודה למלחמה בסרטן, תוך שיתוף פעולה הדוק עם משרד הבריאות (אך לא מימון) וקופות החולים, ועל בסיס פעילותם ההתנדבותית של חברי הוועדות המקצועיות של האגודה, ישראל נמצאת במקום מוביל בקרב מדינות העולם המפותח בכל אחד מסעיפי האמנה. פעילות האגודה הובילה להישגים של ממש ברמה הלאומית, עם הכרה בינלאומית.

Spinal and Extra-Spinal Tumors Mimicking Discal Herniation

Low back pain radiating to a limb is usually caused by lumbar disc herniation. Tumors of the spinal cord or near the sciatic or femoral plexus can cause neural compression and clinical signs similar to those of disc herniation. Such tumors are usually misdiagnosed as discal herniation and appropriate treatment is delayed. We present 4 men who had tumors causing low back pain radiating to the leg: a 70-year-old with metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, a 20-year-old with aneurysmal bone cyst of the vertebral column, a 52-year-old with retroperitoneal sarcoma and a 32-year-old who also had retroperitoneal sarcoma. Diagnosis and trwere delayed because the clinical symptoms were ascribed to lumbar disc herniation. The latter 2 patients had CT-scans showing lumbar disc herniation, but similar findings are common among asymptomatic individuals.

The differential diagnosis of low back pain radiating to the leg should include tumor when there is a history of cancer, pain not relieved by conservative treatment nor by lying down, pain is increased at night, pain accompanied by weight loss, and when physical examination demonstrates injury to more than 1 nerve root. In these circumstances work-up should include EMG, radioisotope scan and CT of the pelvis.

Differentiated Thyroid Cancer In Arabs In Northern Israel

Prognostic factors and survival rate of 53 Arabs with differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid treated here were reviewed. Papillary carcinoma was diagnosed in 35 (66%) and follicular carcinoma in 18 (34%); the female/male ratio was 2.3/1 and the median age 32. Age, gender, tumor size, histology and tumor stage were important prognostic factors. The 20-year actuarial survival rate of the entire group was 96%. The probable reason for the high survival rate was the low median age.
