    IMA Activities

    Outlined below are the main activities of the Israeli Medical Association, highlighting its efforts to represent physicians, enhance professional development, and contribute to the improvement of healthcare standards.

    IMA members enjoy a comprehensive range of benefits tailored to their professional needs and career stage. These include opportunities for continuing medical education, professional development, and personalized career guidance throughout all phases of a physician’s journey.

    In addition, the IMA provides a variety of welfare and social support services. These include medical insurance (included in local membership), access to a consumer club, retirement planning seminars, activities for pensioners, special financial assistance, workshops, family programs, and more.

    As a representative labor organization, the IMA negotiates with employers and signs collective agreements that define physician working conditions, salaries, and employment benefits for physicians. The IMA also provides assistance with salary negotiations, legal and insurance matters, retirement planning, and more.

    The IMA operates dedicated hotlines for physicians to report incidents of online shaming, sexual harassment or violence in medical settings, ensuring their safety, protection, and legal support.

    Through the Scientific Council, the IMA oversees residency training, specialization, and continuing medical education. The Council is the statutory authority responsible for all aspects of postgraduate medical training, including residency programs, departmental accreditation, examinations, and specialist certification.

    The IMA incorporates numerous professional associations and medical societies representing all specialties. These bodies form the scientific and professional backbone of Israel’s medical community and of the IMA’s activities.

    The IMA plays an active role in the international medical community. It is a member of numerous global medical organizations, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration with colleagues around the world. The IMA maintains strong reciprocal relationships with medical associations worldwide and may join international professional organizations as a branch, department, or other official entity.

    Through initiatives such as international projects, conferences, joint events, and continuing education programs, the IMA actively promotes Israeli medicine on the global stage. It also publishes a range of materials—including position papers, the IMA Around the Globe newsletter, and four medical journals: IMAJ, JIMS, Harefuah (in Hebrew), and JIMM.

    The IMA fosters a strong sense of community among medical professionals, both in Israel and globally. Through collaboration with international organizations and the IMA International Membership Program, it builds bridges between Israeli doctors and their counterparts worldwide. These connections are further strengthened through international meetings, events, and joint initiatives.

    The IMA’s Ethics Board formulates the physician’s code of ethics and handles issues relating to medical ethics, ethical complaints between colleagues and complaints filed by the general public against physicians.

    The IMA plays an active role in shaping legislation related to healthcare, public health, and the medical profession in Israel. The legal division provides ongoing legal guidance to all branches of the organization and addresses legal matters concerning the physician community.

    The legal division offers expert advice on a wide range of employment and professional issues, including contracts, salaries, workplace rights, dismissal procedures, parental leave, and workplace discrimination.

    Through its Institute for Quality in Medicine, the IMA coordinates the activities of the medical community in the area of quality assurance in medicine and risk management, including informed consent forms, position papers and clinical guidelines and panels on areas related to public health and quality assurance in medicine.

    The IMA Campus offers courses to ensure physicians’ continuing education.

    The IMA is committed to promoting medical education and safeguarding patient rights. It organizes symposia and public forums on a variety of healthcare topics and publishes position papers to influence public discourse and establish professional standards for the medical community.
