    July 7, 2025: Participation of doctors in determining the identity of hostages to be released in the upcoming phase

    We demand clear and explicit confirmation that physicians will not participate in any committee regarding the release of hostages, if established, nor in decisions on the matter. Furthermore, they must not be required to provide opinions on who should be released.

    The Israeli Medical Association issued a detailed rebuttal to the New York Review of Books article “The Shame of Israeli Medicine.” The response expressed concern over selective omissions and misrepresentations, reaffirmed the Association’s longstanding commitment to medical ethics, neutrality, and international humanitarian law, and called for a more balanced and honest portrayal of the complex realities at hand.
    June 2025: IMA Response to Soroka Missile Strike
    Statement from the IMA President

     

    Chairman of the Israeli Medical Association, Prof. Zion Hagay: "The eyes of the entire world should be turned this morning to Soroka Medical Center, to understand what a war crime truly looks like.

    I send strength and heartfelt support to all our colleagues at Soroka who are working tirelessly day and night, and I wish a swift recovery to all the wounded across all fronts. I call on the international medical community to strongly condemn this atrocity committed by Iran."

    According to him, while Israel targets military objectives, the Iranians deliberately fire at population centers in order to harm as many civilians as possible.

    "Only thanks to the proper preparedness of Soroka Medical Center was a much greater disaster averted. I call on the public to follow the guidelines, which without a doubt save lives
    May 26, 2025: Declaration on Medical Neutrality and Safe Passage of Humanitarian Aid
    The Israeli Medical Association calls for the immediate and safe return of all our hostages, both living and deceased, held in Gaza by the Hamas terrorist organization.

    As reiterated since the outbreak of the war, the IMA upholds internationally accepted ethical principles and insists on respect for humanitarian law: refraining from the use of medical facilities as military or terrorist compounds, and avoiding harm to medical personnel, healthcare institutions, or emergency vehicles—except in cases where they are exploited as bases for terrorist activity. For the Full Text

    February 26, 2025: Shackling of Prisoners and Detainees in Hospitals

    Hospitals are places of care and compassion, not punishment. Physicians have a duty to preserve the dignity, privacy, and health of every individual.

    While we acknowledge the complex security situation currently facing the country, alternative security measures (such as additional security personnel) should always be prioritized. Shackling must be considered only as a last resort, when no other option is available, and even then applied in the most minimal and proportionate manner necessary. For the Full Text

    October 22, 2023: Atmosphere of Incitement Against Arab Doctors in the Healthcare System
    Letter from Members of the Scientific Academy

    Since the beginning of the war, there have been reports of repeated incidents where Arab medical professionals were targeted on social media by pressure groups demanding their suspension, based on unfounded accusations of supporting terrorism.

    In some cases, their statements were merely general expressions, devoid of any support for violence or Hamas; in others, they simply expressed compassion for civilian suffering.

    We are also witnessing racist remarks and incitement both online and on the streets, to the extent that some Arab healthcare staff now fear coming to work.

     

    September 2023: The restraint of prisoners and detainees in hospitals

    The IMA Ethics Bureau updated its position on the treatment of restrained prisoners and detainees in hospitals, emphasizing the physician’s ethical duty to protect dignity, privacy, and health. The paper reaffirms that restraints during medical care must not be routine and should only be used when no alternative exists. Physicians are urged to intervene if restraints endanger a patient’s physical or mental well-being, and they must refuse participation in any treatment involving disproportionate or unauthorized restraint methods. For the Full Text 

    May 30, 2023: Solitary Confinement of Minors

    The Israeli Medical Association requested a meeting with the Israel Prison Service to discuss the solitary confinement of minor prisoners, following an inquiry from the British Medical Association.     May 16, 2023: Proposed Amendment to the Prisons Ordinance
