    + - Congratulations to Prof. Lior Gepstein upon receipt of the prestigious 2023 Kadar-Sheba Award for Excellence in Research

    A highly accomplished physician-scientist from Rambam Health Care Campus and the Technion in Haifa, he was elected Laureate of the Kadar-Sheba Award for Excellence in Research for 2023 due to his extraordinary achievements in the field of cardiac electrophysiology and innovative treatment methods for cardiac disease.

    Prof Loewenstein was selected due to her expertise in retinal disease, her development of world-recognized technologies and treatment techniques and her groundbreaking leadership skills.

    Prof. Gil Markel will head a new institute for cancer research and treatment

    Congratulations to Prof. Gil Markel, head of the Davidoff Center for Cancer Treatment at Beilinson Hospital and a member of the Young Academy, on his appointment as the head of the Samueli Institute for Research and Innovation in Cancer, which is being established thanks to an unprecedented donation of NIS 120 million and with the support of Clalit Health Services.

     

    The Institute will combine groundbreaking medical research in cancer with artificial intelligence and big data and is liable to bring groundbreaking advances to the treatment of cancer.

    + - Congratulations to Prof. Simcha Yagel upon receiving the Ian Donald Gold Medal

    Congratulations to Prof. Simcha Yagel upon receiving the Ian Donald Gold Medal from The International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG). This is the first time an Israeli has won this prestigious gold medal.

    ISUOG honored Prof. Yagel with this lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the advancement of diagnostic ultrasound in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.

    Prof. Eli Pikarsky is one of the recipients of the Rappaport Prize for Excellence in Bio-medical Research for 2023.

    Prof. Pikarsky was selected in the category of senior researcher.

    The Israeli National Academy for Science in Medicine congratulates Prof. Dina Ben Yehuda on her effective, successful and sensitive leadership of the Committee for the Basket of Health Services, 2022, and on the incredible achievements of the Committee for the health system and the patients.

    + - Prof. Dina Ben Yehuda appointed as chair of the Committee for the Expansion of the Basket of Services

    Prof. ben Yehuda is the first woman to stand at the head of the Committee.  At the Committee's first meeting, Prof. Ben Yehuda opened by saying "As a physician, I know how it feels when I and my patients are waiting to find out what medicines will be included in the basket.  I know the feeling of happiness when a medication is included, and the disappointment when it is not.  I approach my position as chair of the Committee with awe and respect.  We have a long road ahead of us, but we are confident it will succeed."

    Sheba Medical Center, the leading medical center in Israel, both in medical care and in innovative research has established an extensive Physician Scientist Program with the vision to promote and advance basic and patient-oriented Translational research at Sheba.

    Congratulations to Prof. Eli Sprecher upon his appointment as Vice Dean for clinical affairs at the Tel Aviv University Sackler School of Medicine

    + - Prof. Benjamin Dekel appointed to manage the new Sagol Center for Regenerative Medicine

    Among other things, the new center will develop regenerative therapies and drugs, move regenerative medicine from the theoretical research stage to the feasibility stage and train a new generation of physicians and researchers in the field.

    Prof. Dekel's vision is to use the center to reduce the gap between biomedical research and patient care, to promote the establishment of clinical regenerative wards in the hospital and to cure patients with the new technologies that will be developed

    + - Congratulations to Prof. RafaelBeyar on his election as a Haifa Honorary Citizen

    The Haifa Honorary Citizen Award is given annually by the Mayor of Haifa to long-time residents who have engaged in public activities on behalf of the city and its residents, as a token of gratitude and appreciation for their many years of contribution to the city and State. The award is given once a year, to 8 to 12 people selected from the recommendations and nominations presented.

               

    Prof. Beyar is one of the founding members of the Academy and is a specialist in cardiology.  He served as director of the Rambam Medical Campus from 2006-2019 and was dean of the Technion's Faculty of Medicine.

     

    + - The Academy congratulates Dr. Oren Pleniceanu upon receiving the prestigious "Ziegler prize" for 2022

    The Ziegler prize was established by the Ziegler family in memory of Reuven Ziegler, and recognizes young physicians and researchers for applied research, this year's focus being "precision medicine".  Pleniceanu won for his recent work on the topic of Successful Introduction of Human Renovascular Units into the Mammalian Kidney, which was published in the Journal of American Society of Nephrology (J Am Soc Nephrol 31: 2757–2772, 2020).

    The prizes is administered by the Israeli National Academy of Medical Sciences in conjunction with the Ziegler family and the Technion's Rappaport Faculty of Medicine.

    + - Congratulations to Prof. Shai Izraeli upon receipt of the 2022 Education and Mentoring Award

    Congratulations to Prof. Shai Izraeli upon receipt of the 2022 Education and Mentoring Award from the European Hematology Association. The award is granted to excellent teachers and mentors at any stage of their career, providing mentorship, training and formation of personal skills of high educational value in the discipline of hematology.  

    Professor Izraeli was recognized for mentoring scores of young physicians and researchers and for his part in initiating "Young EHA" which integrates young physician and researchers in various aspects of the EHA.

    Congratulations to Professor Jacob Bornstein on receiving an award of recognition from the Israeli Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology for his long-standing contribution to the field in Israel and around the world.

    Prof. Bornstein's contributions can be found in the professional, educational and research realms and improve both the health of women and the practice of medicine.

    Congratulations to Prof. Jacob Bornstein upon his appointment as editor in chief of Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease.

    Prof. Bornstein is the first non-American to be appointed as editor in chief of this journal, which is the official journal of the American organization ASCCP and the leading journal in the field.

    Congratulations to Prof. Ron Dagan, a professor of pediatrics and infectious diseases at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, upon his selection to present the 2021 Robert Austrian Memorial Lecture at the virtual 2021 Annual Conference on Vaccinology Research of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, on Tuesday, April 27, 2021

    + - Congratulations to Professor Gidi Rechavi upon receiving the Israel Prize in Medicine for 2020

    Prof. Rechavi is a specialist in pediatrics, hematology and pediatric hematology-oncology.  He has served as the head of the Department of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at the Sheba Medical Center and today he directs the Cancer Research Center and the Wohl Center for Translational Medicine at Sheba.  His research focuses on understanding the molecular basis for cancer and on the study of RNA modifications (epitranscriptomics).

     

    The Israel Prize committee noted that Professor Rechavi "exemplifies the optimal combination of excellence in clinical medicine and groundbreaking research achievements in understanding basic biological mechanisms for the development of novel therapeutic modalities”.

     

    Professor Rechavi has published 500 articles in leading scientific and medical journals, including Science, Nature, Cell, Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine.

     

    Professor Rechavi holds the Djerassi Chair in Oncology at the Tel Aviv University, he has received numerous awards including the prestigious EMET prize and is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences.

    + - Congratulations to Professor Jacob (Kobi) Pe'er upon receiving the Joanne G. Angle Award for 2020

     

    Congratulations to Professor Jacob (Kobi) Pe'er upon receiving the Joanne G. Angle Award for 2020 from the Association for research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the pre-eminent organization worldwide for the study of vision and the eye, with over 12,000 members.
     
    The Joanne G. Angle Award is the highest honor bestowed by ARVO to recognize outstanding leaders who have made significant, continuous contributions to the Association in support of our mission. The award recognizes members that have demonstrated long‐standing personal involvement with and commitment to ARVO and the vision research community.
     
    Prof. Pe'er is a specialist in ophthalmology at Hadassah medical Center and a researcher in the field of oncology and pathology of the eye.
    + - Congratulations to Prof. Ora Israel upon her receiving honorary membership in the European Association of Nuclear Medicine

    Congratulations to Prof. Ora Israel upon her receiving honorary membership in the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, the largest organization in Europe dedicated to nuclear medicine.

    According to the EANM website, "The EANM Honorary Membership is reserved for persons of outstanding distinction practicing in the field of nuclear medicine and who provided great service or reputation to the EANM or the field of nuclear medicine."

    This is the first time an Israeli physician has received this recognition and we are honored to have Prof. Israel as a member of the Academy.

    Congratulations to Prof. Ora Israel on being selected as the recipient and speaker of the 2021 Barry Siegel Lectureship Award, to be given during the 2021 SNMMI Annual Meeting in Washington DC, June 12-15. 

    The award is given each year to a professional who plays an important role in emphasizing the importance of correlative imaging with Nuclear Medicine.  

    + - Congratulations to Prof. Rivka Carmi upon receiving the Mifal Hapais Landau Lifetime Achievement Award

     

    Congratulations to Prof. Rivka Carmi upon receiving the Mifal Hapais Landau Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was given “for outstanding initiative to advance medicine and health services in the Negev"

    Among her other positions, Prof Carmi served both as dean of the medical school and president of the Ben Gurion University in the Negev, as well as founding the genetics institute at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba.
