Bariatric Surgery in Adolescents With Obesity: Weight and Cardiometabolic Outcomes-Real-World Data (Jun 5)
This real-world Israeli cohort study evaluated the long-term outcomes of bariatric surgery in adolescents with obesity, using data from 1,035 patients aged 12–20 years who underwent surgery between 2010 and 2024. The researchers found a significant and sustained reduction in BMI, with the greatest weight loss occurring during the first 1–3 years after surgery and persisting over a median follow-up of 5.8 years. In addition, blood pressure and several cardiometabolic risk factors improved substantially, with benefits observed across socioeconomic and ethnic groups. The findings support bariatric surgery as an effective long-term treatment for severe adolescent obesity. [pubmed.ncb...lm.nih.gov], [eurekamag.com]
